Supportive Technology

The promise of technology in the field of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities cannot be understated.

May Institute’s Supportive Technology team provides the highest-quality supportive technology evaluation, intervention, consultation, and training to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) of all ages and backgrounds and in all settings. We provide Assistive Technology and remote support services to individuals, families, organizations, and schools, including individuals served through May Institute programs.

Our Goals:

  • Enable every person we serve to reach their highest level of independence, achievement, connection, and happiness through the use of technology; and
  • Enable staff, support teams, and organizations to deliver more effective and efficient services so they can do what they love best: provide meaningful and joyful care.

What is Supportive Technology?

Supportive technology consists of assistive technology and remote support technology.

What is Assistive technology (AT)?

Assistive technology (AT) is the use of any tool, program, device, or piece of equipment that allows a person with disabilities to achieve increased independence. One important area of AT for autistic individuals and those with IDD is the use of tools to support or replace speech, known as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

Examples of Assistive Technology:

  • Speech-generating devices for communication
  • speech-to-text and text-to-speech software for those with literacy or visual needs
  • AT for daily living skills such as smart ovens and adapted cooking tools
  • Visual aids such as screen readers or magnifiers
  • AT for hearing, such as light-up doorbells

Remote support technologies are tools that connect staff and clients, increasing staff efficacy and efficiency while increasing individual independence.

Examples of remote supports:

  • Smart screens that enable accessible communication between individuals and their support team
  • Wearable and sensor technology that monitors health biometrics to increase overall health
  • Life management software that helps people complete tasks more independently while allowing data collection and management by staff
