Christian

Christian loves boating, swimming, bowling, and riding rollercoasters, especially at Disney World. And he’s come a long way since his diagnosis of cerebral palsy at a young age. Christian attended Barnstable Public Schools in Massachusetts until he turned 22 years old. Prior to graduation, his parents, Ron and Jill, looked at adult services programs on Cape Cod. After visiting several places, they were immediately captivated by the program size, staff, and energy May Institute had to offer. 

“We were impressed by the applied behavior analysis approach the May staff and clinicians use,” said Jill and Ron. “We were thrilled that Christian would continue to learn and become more independent.” 

Christian started at May Institute’s Day Habilitation program in 2006. Since Christian is so flexible and easy going, the transition to the new program was seamless. His parents were impressed with the staff’s communication and high level of care.

The family always had a long-term goal for Christian to move into a group residence. In 2017, staff approached Jill and Ron about an opening at one of May’s community-based residences. They thought it would be an excellent fit for him. After careful thought, Ron and Jill decided Christian should move into the residence. 

The staff was very supportive as they transitioned Christian to living in the house. He immediately settled in and started to form friendships with the staff and housemates. It was hard for Ron and Jill to see Christian leave home, but they knew they had made the right decision. “We are extremely happy Christian enjoys living at the house. He has a safe place to live where we don’t have to worry.”

Christian has become more independent since moving into the residence. The staff set goals for him to work on. After dinner during one of Christian’s visits home, Ron and Jill noticed that Christian picked up his plate and brought it to the sink. This was something they had never seen him do before. Christian also surprised them by placing his discarded clothes in the hamper. They continue to be excited to see Christian becoming more independent and reaching his goals. 

The family is extremely grateful for everything May Institute does for their son. They describe Christian as a happy, active person who enjoys spending time with his parents and older brother Brendan.
