Michelle Mendes
2023 Exceptional Service Award Recipient

Assistant Residential Director
May Center for Adult Services
Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts

Michelle Mendes deserves to be recognized for her outstanding commitment to May Institute and to the individuals we serve.

She has worked for the May for over 25 years and, during that time, has seen so many changes in practices, policies, and personnel. However, during those changes, she has remained a steadfast employee and a positive caregiver. Through the years, Michelle has faced many challenges with composure and a “can-do” attitude. A pandemic and the resulting staffing shortages were not enough to break her spirit or her stride—she showed up every day dedicated to the men and women we serve.

Michelle is compassionate, respectful, and determined. Her compassion for the individuals she serves shows no bias. She is respectful in all of her daily interactions. Michelle is determined to get what is needed for everyone, no matter how much energy it requires or how long it takes to achieve her mission.

She has enriched so many lives—taking individuals across the country to see their families and on beautiful vacations, for example. In addition, she does all the small daily tasks that keep programs and homes running, down to ensuring the groceries are delivered and put away, and the meals prepared are healthy and yummy! She has spent time with individuals as their lives have drawn to a close and been a rock to their families and their staff.

Michelle has taught us all what it means to persevere, what loyalty looks like, and above all, how to show love and compassion, expecting nothing in return.

Staff like Michelle are a rare breed of professionals. We are very fortunate to have her as a leader in Cape Cod Southeast programs and May Institute.
