Jill Fitzgerald-Sugrue
2023 Exceptional Service Award Recipient

Director of Healthcare Services
May Center School for Autism and Developmental Disabilities
Randolph, Mass.

Jill is a skillful nurse, respected leader, and a consummate professional. Her ability to manage a large healthcare team and help ensure continuity of care for the students of May Center Randolph is truly admirable. She is infinitely reliable, efficient, and helpful.

Despite staffing shortages, every single day, Jill ensures that medications get passed, medical appointments get scheduled and followed up on, admissions are evaluated and processed, staff trained and supported, and injuries tended to with the accompanying hurt and fear soothed.

Also notable is Jill’s willingness to help other Centers with their healthcare needs. She has frequently helped staff other nursing clinics in a pinch, willingly taking on the extra work and responsibility for the good of the individuals served. She has set up immunization clinics not only for her Center, but also for corporate staff. Jill generously consults with other nurses on questions and issues that arise.

She works tirelessly to ensure our students receive the support they need, and that families and staff are well informed and comfortable with health intervention plans. Jill has led multiple teams through difficult medical situations to ensure proper care and attention for our students. Her guidance and expertise have been essential, particularly in navigating the more complex medical incidents that come about.

Jill goes above and beyond, as has been exemplified by her visiting the hospital off-hours to check in on the progress of admitted students, her strong advocacy for students in conversations with hospitals and administrators, and her effective delegation of nursing responsibilities, especially when supports are limited. She is fiercely committed to providing the best standards of care for our students and families, and to supporting and advocating for her department toward that end. She is well deserving of the 2023 Exceptional Service Award.
