Honoring Groundbreaking Autism Awareness Initiative

Randolph, Mass. — Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit media and educational organization behind Sesame Street, has received May Institute’s first President’s Award in recognition of its outstanding efforts to promote autism awareness. May Institute is a national nonprofit that provides evidence-based services to individuals across the lifespan with autism and other special needs.

“We created The President’s Award to recognize and honor individuals, organizations, or corporations that have achieved professional distinction through a strong commitment to bringing respectful awareness to and support of autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, or other special needs,” said May Institute President and CEO Lauren C. Solotar, Ph.D., ABPP, who presented the award at the organization’s recent Evening of Hope and Possibility event in Boston.

Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Sesame Workshop’s Senior Vice President for U.S. Social Impact, accepted the award for Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children, a global initiative that fosters understanding about autism. Developed with input from parents of neuroatypical and neurotypical young children, autistic adults, and over 250 organizations and experts within the autism community, See Amazing in All Children offers families free resources to simplify everyday activities and overcome common challenges – and increases public understanding of autism across communities. The smiling face at the center of the initiative belongs to Julia – a sweet and curious four-year-old girl Muppet with autism.

“[Like May Institute,] Sesame Workshop believes that every child is born with unlimited possibilities, and each child is unique and different,” said Dr. Betancourt. “Not only do we share in your mission, we share in your passion and we hope that Julia, as well as the theme of See Amazing in All Children, goes with each of you both in heart and spirit, and in your actions.”

The President’s Award may be offered annually by May Institute’s President and CEO to a deserving honoree selected by May’s Executive Leadership.
